GERMANY – UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FALLS TO RECORD LOW RATE

Germany’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate fell to 5.8% in March, 0.1% lower than the previous month, and reaching the lowest level since the country’s reunification according to data from the Federal Labour Office.

The number of people who were unemployed in March fell by a seasonally adjusted 30,000 to 2.6 million. “The job market continues to develop favourably,” Detlef Scheele, board member of the labor agency, said in a statement. “With the onset of spring activity, the number of unemployed people has declined, employment growth is continuing unabatedly, and demand for new employees continues to be high.” The number of unemployed fell by about 18,000 in western Germany and by 12,000 in eastern Germany.

Unemployment is expected to continue to fall further this year.
